E-Commerce Websites Use Facebook Fan Pages to Increase Sales

by Doug Stewart on January 11, 2010

Two e-commerce websites that use Facebook fan pages effectively are The Popcorn Factory and 1-800-Flowers. Today the Popcorn Factory has 8,841 Facebook fans. 1-800-Flowers has 13,595 fans:

1-800-Flowers bribes people with a discount to become a fan:

They also bribe you into telling them your birthday. . .

The Popcorn Factory asks everyone who visits their home page to become a Facebook “fan”:

I was on a conference call today and we were discussing how one person on the call gets so many blog subscribers. Her answer? Ask everyone you meet to subscribe. Hhmmm. Ask people. What a novel idea.

Want Facebook fans for your e-commerce store? Ask. A bribe or two won’t hurt either.

  • In the cases of 1-800-flowers and other companies that use "bribes" to entice fans, I have to wonder if the fan benefits continue past joining . What keeps fans from leaving the fan page after they receive the initial discount, and does the fan page serve any greater purpose, such as to offer exclusive coupons, provide relevant content, host contests, etc.?
  • Great questions Michelle. I think I'll sign-up as a fan and find out.
