“Success is nothing more than a few simple disciplines, practiced every day; while failure is simply a few errors in judgment, repeated every day. It is the accumulative weight of our disciplines and our judgments that leads us to either fortune or failure.” – Jim Rohn
Before starting my business in 1999, I was a salesperson. I mainly sold technology and computer hardware. During those years I had the honor of working with some truly great salespeople.
One of these master salespeople was always at work early. On most days he ate his lunch at his desk. He was honest. And he truly cared about all those around him. He told me:
“Plan your work, work your plan.”
He also outsold almost everyone in the office.
One smart and successful boss told me the best lesson he learned was:
Have a selling system. I don’t care what system you use. But use a system.
Promoting your business online is the same. You need a plan or a system. And you need to work it.
In Jay Conrad Levinson’s book, Guerrilla Retailing: Unconventional Ways to Make Big Profits From Your Retail Business , he talks about using a marketing calendar. Write down your monthly plan for 1 year of promotions. After completing a promotion, you rate its’ effectiveness. Then the next year, you look at the previous year’s calendar. Replace ineffective promotions with new promotions. By the end of 3 years, you have a marketing plan with all “A” promotions.
This is a great idea for promoting your business on the internet. Create your plan. Then work your plan.
